What
we did in Japan was largely dictated by the interests of my son Tony, a typical
Eleven-year-old American boy. If I had been traveling alone or with an
adult I might have spent more time studying Buddhism and Shinto and Japanese art
history. I certainly would have eaten more sushi and spent more time
drinking sake in bars.
We typically played video games for about 2 hours everyday , usually in one
of the many large video game parlors, SegaWorld being our favorite. In
many ways I feel as though I learned more about Japanese culture from
this activity than I would have in art museums.
