Vietri
2002
These
photos illustrate typical scenes in Vietri sul Mare (immediately north of
Salerno on the Amalf Coast). Vietri is famous for its ceramic factories
and shops. There are about 20 to 25 ceramic stores in Vietri (I have never
actually counted them).
Whenever we go to Salerno we of course go to Vietri.
Tony
inside our favorite shop - "Bisogno Giuseppe" - we always seem to
come back to this one - it is near the center of town or rather the main road to
Amalfi-Salerno and has both a front entrance and a side entrance down an alley.
This is the shop where we have bought most of the Vietri pottery we have at home.

Close-ups
of "our pattern" - we have quite of few of these pieces ("the
fish pattern") in blue at home.
This
shop, possibly new since our last visit 4 years ago, sells unglazed
pottery. Tony bought some pieces to bring home to glaze himself...

We
bought this mirror (center of the photo to the right) for 200 Euros ($200) and
we are having it shipped for an additional 50 Euros. We thought about
carrying it back but it was a little too big. The mirror arrived on July
12, 2002 with no problem. This is a nice shop, Venere Ceramica, a little
ways down the street on the left in from the "center" of town,
opposite the shop that sells unglazed pottery. Venere Ceramica has a
website: http://www.venereceramica.it
I recommend them highly.

We
are not in the market for a table like these, but just out of curiosity we
inquired: about $1000 for tiles and iron table, shipped to Boston. In
Ravello (not a good place to shop for bargains) I had observed an American
couple negotiating to buy a similar, smaller, round table for $2000 with
shipping.
