Paestum 2002

The temples at Paestum are still cordoned-off so that you can no longer walk inside them.  I know (from Photos) that as recently as 1995 we could walk inside them, and I was told that they were once again open, but they were not.  Some of these photos create the illusion that there is no barrier, but that's because they were taken up-close with a super wide-angle lens (17MM) - I was actually shooting just over the fence.  In one of these you can see me in front of a temple - the shot was taken with the camera's self-timer.  I sacrificed an afternoon at the beach and a lot of wine at lunch (in Lido Lago) so I could make this pilgrimage to Paestum.  When we stayed in Lido Lago in the summer of 1998 I drove to Paestum nearly every morning just to buy an English-language newspaper.   These pictures were taken on Saturday, June 29, 2002.
