Dolomites
2002
On
Thursday June 20th we drove down from Salzburg where we had spent two
nights. After stopping in Bolzano for picnic supplies we wasted a couple
of hours trying to find a good route across the Dolomites to Misurina, where we
planned to stay for the night. We finally settled upon the
"SS48" after discovering that the road to CastelRotto
(or what we thought was the road to CastelRotto) was closed for
construction.
It took us about 4 hours to drive the SS48 to Misurina. The drive is spectacular, but tiring. I believe that the photo at left of Tony and Alfonsa and our Opel Zafira was taken near Mazzin, about 1/4 of the way to Misurina.
We actually ended up having our picnic in an AutoGrill parking lot off the highway near Bolzano. From this spot we began our scenic drive through the mountains.
The
Pordoi Pass, one of two we drove through that day (three if you count the
Brenner Pass).
Falzarego
Pass, not too far from Cortina.
